It was a beautiful day in England. Sunny and cool. Definitely my type of weather. :)
After 11 hours of sleep the night before, I am feeling real good. We were picked up by Brandy and Gary, directors at the youth center, at 9 this morning to head to the base for a tour of RAF Lakenheath. We first stopped at a building where we got our badges to get on base and a card that gave us privileges to use the Commissary, where we would buy our groceries, and the BX, which is a mini, mini-mall with food, gift, and clothing shops. We then went into the ITT, which is a travel agency on base to get information about bus trips, places to go in England, and travel prices. We grabbed a lot of brochures and are super pumped to start see the sites
We then walked around and got to see the hospital, BX, movie theater, club, and shoppette. We drove to the movie store and there we bought phones. Our coordinator Brandy paid for our first month of minutes and texts. We can only make local calls but we may be able to get international minutes another time. We then drove by the post office and then headed over to the youth center.
We got an official tour of the building since we were so tired the first day. The building is absolutely beautiful and big. There are three classrooms with tons of cool supplies and stations around the room for many activities. There is a huge gym, playground, and rec area as well. We then met the staff around 2pm and then got to go to the commissary to get groceries for the week. The commissary was like HyVee but cheaper and no tax! The no tax is included everywhere on base which is amazing! We didn’t need a whole lot because the staff has been amazing and provide us with welcome baskets. Brandy also bought our leader a cake for her birthday and our first “community groceries” for the week. She is truly amazing!
After shopping, we drove into Feltwell village to see where we could visit during time off. We drove down by a pub and decided we would go there for dinner for our camp leader's birthday. There is a back gate to the base right next to the pub and of course it is locked at all times. So we had to go out the main gate if we decided to go. We came back to the dorm and unpacked the groceries and got ready for the night ahead. We decided to walk to the pub. Turned out to be a 45 minute walk. nice exercise but long. lol. It was nice to see all of the village and take in the scenery. Wish I could show you all what I saw but I forgot to grab my camera. :( Promise that won't happen again. lol.
So we walked down to the pub, hungry for dinner, only to find out that the restaurant part of the pub was not open. We had to called ahead to make reservations so that someone would be there to make dinner. So to make up for the walk we eat ordered a drink to celebrate Brittany's birthday before making the long trek back. We went another way back to see more scenery and wanted to stop at a fish and chips place, but again, closed. So we went into a convenience store and got some chocolate. BEST. CHOCOLATE. EVER. Cadbury. So good. One of the girls found a candy bar called a Yorkie and it said, this is not for girls. So of course two of the girls bought it. lol. :)
We started to head back to the dorm after that. It was a nice walk but had a few encounters along the way. We were honked at twice, which was interesting. We were also honked at and mooned by a car full of guys. Definitely hilarious and gross at the same time. lol. When we were starting to walk on the base, a gate separated us from the main road and the base road. While we were walking, a guy, that had drove by twice and honked, pulled to the side and called us fit, which apparently means very attractive. He asked us for our number but we didn't give it to him. And he was trying to tell us where he lived. Maryanne just shot back funny comments. It was quite interesting.
We made it back to the dorm and one of the girls made grilled cheese and we had cake. It was nice and relaxing. Then we headed off to bed. Hope tomorrow is just as great, but without any mooning. :)
